Alexa loves...those 70s vibes

A 70s revival has began, I'm sure you will have noticed. It's been in nearly every A/W 15 fashion show including Henry Hollands with those bold prints and Marchesa's flowing bohemian dresses.

This inspired me when we were faced with the challenging of designing bottoms for ASOS at college. We had to pick a decade between the 60's and the 90's so I thought seeing as the 70's is one of my favourite decades and because it's on it's way back into the fashion world it was the best decade to choose.

These are a few of the designs I have created so far inspired by the 70's....

What do you think? As you can see I love patterns and I've used so many original 70's patterns as well as creating my own but which design do I choose to make.... decisions, decisions, decisions.

Alexa loves... Sewing

I never thought I would say this but I have actually really enjoyed pattern cutting and sewing recently. Last year I found sewing quite challenging but this year it's been really fun!

We have been experimenting and creating different styles and features of skirts and I have really enjoyed it! This is something I created today inspired by a balenciago skirt my tutor found in a magazine.

Mine is the second from the right! I know it doesn't look quite as good as the others but we all used different lengths and materials as it was an experiment to see how diverse we could make them and which would look the best. It turn out the stiffer the material the more wavy the skirt looks.

This has all been in preparation for our next project working with ASOS which I will tell you more about very soon.....

Alexa loves... Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton is always super stylish and she didn't fail to stun on her wedding day!  Wearing a beautiful white, ankle length dress which showed off her pretty strappy shoes. The silver sequin embellishment on the top off this simple yet beautiful dress suits Fearnes sparkling personality perfectly!

Alexa loves... Sales

It's sale time again! Hurray! Nothing better than picking up a few style steals in the sale but sometimes they can leave you feeling completely overwhelmed! Where do you start? Do I need this?
Don't worry I've got a few tips on how to stop the sales stressing you out!

1. Where do I start? What do you need? Is there something you need to finish off an outfit? Maybe a top to put with that stunning skirt that waiting in your wardrobe? Start with the tops.

2. Is there something that was in the store a few weeks ago that you couldn't quite grab before it was never to be seen again? You never know you might see it again here amongst the rails of the sale. It may take a bit of searching but you might be reunited with that dress you fell in love with weeks ago. I've done it quite a few times!

3. Always try on because it is not very often that you are allowed to return sale items so you could be stuck with something that's I'll fitting or just does not look the way you thought it would.

4. Do I need this? This is a question I always ask myself in the sales. Am I just buying it because it is cheap or do I actually want it? It can sometimes be a hard decision but it is an important one because do you really want to waste your money on a cheap shirt when you could put that money towards that gorgeous pair of shorts you really wanted?

Sales can be hard work especially in the more messy sale shops but hopefully these tips will help you out an help you to get what you really want from the sales!

Alexa loves... Costumes

Yesterday I went to the Huddersfield university costume show which was brilliant!

I love costumes and theatre anyway but this showed me how much hard work actually goes into the costumes we see in the theatre, in the cinema or on tv!

Here are some pieces from yesterday. I wish I could show you all of the pieces really close up because the detail on them was amazing but the lighting wasn't always great.

I love this, designed for A Midsummer Nights Dream! My favourite being the bright, colourful one on the right.

This picture isn't very clear but I had to show it to you because the dress was really good!

These costumes were designed for 80 Days Around The World.

These were so quirky I would love to go and see the show they were designed for.

These costumes were amazing there was so much going on and so much detail you just didn't know where to look!

You can't see on this image unfortunately but the girl had a bird cage in her hair which was fab and the front of the dress had a bird cage embroided onto it.

These pieces were so detailed I wish I could get a closer look.

This costume was so scary! Perfect mood setter for the theatre.

I wish I could have got a picture of these two costumes together. The caging detail at the back of this dress is so inspiring. I would love to know the story behind these two costumes.

So much research must have gone into these costumes.

These costumes were designed for Sweeney Tod! How good are they?!

This costume was brilliant especailly when the lights went off!

When the model walked the dress floated behind her which was so beautiful.

The detail of the jacket was incredible must have taken a lot of researching.

The Rocky Horror costumes were perfect for Rocky Horror.

The detail of this costume was fabulous. Bruise patterns on the back, cuts with a blood look and a dress that looks like it's all ripped. Perfect zombie costume.

These costumes give off a modern feel of an old tale.

This costume was amazing!

These images are not good quality but the costumes were so good I had to share them with you!

The wicker man costumes were truly terrifying!

This was one of my favourite costumes because it's inspired by the fabulous 1950's! The hair and make up we're amazing too!

This costume was fruity fabulous. From orange to a beautiful girl.

This was another one of my favourites. The Corpse Bride costume was fabulously detailed from one side being a perfect dress turning to the other side which was the bare bones frame of the dress with all the inside pouring out. Pretty gruesome but exactly right for the Corpse bride.

All of the costumes were absolutely amazing. And so was the hair and make up. I want to see all the shows they were made for now because I want to see where all the ideas for such interesting designs came from!
